Director Sebastian Lavie’s Malaysian experience

Mission Unaccomplished

Team New Zealand did not make it through to the World Championships in Czechia this year, falling short at the 2025 14U World Junior Teams event in Malaysia. We came in with high hopes, but a couple of close losses to Chinese Taipei and Thailand in the group stage saw us finish 10th out of 16 teams — not the result we were aiming for.

We’ll always be proud to showcase our accomplishments — but just as importantly, we take responsibility for our losses. The only way forward is to keep learning, stay honest, and continue pushing to develop tennis in New Zealand and get our teams back to the world stage!

As always, it was a privilege to represent the country, and personally, a highlight to see Jacques and Neve — both of whom came through our U10 development programme at Lavie Tennis Academy — compete together and get fired up in their doubles wins together. Watching them battle and bring that energy on the world stage was a moment I’ll remember.

We’re proud to see Lavie Tennis Academy kids representing the country, but our mission doesn’t stop there. We want to see New Zealanders breaking into the top 100 — and we believe it starts with the development pathways we’re building.

Thank you Tennis New Zealand for the opportunity to captain the team. I look forward to the next one!
